SOUTH AFRICA NATIONAL ACTION PLAN
SOUTH AFRICA NATIONAL ACTION PLAN ON WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY
On 18 March 2021, the Republic of South Africa launched the SA National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security, which is a notable landmark.
The South African National Action Plan was adopted in August 2020 and provides a holistic approach to ensuring women’s peace and security.
The SA National Action Plan (NAP) aligns with:
Priority 5: Social Cohesion and Safe Communities and;
Priority 7: A Better Africa and World
The South African NAP indicators are also aligned to the African Union Continental Results Framework
.
Through the GEF platform SA has established a working group to mobilise around the WPS Compact.
It is timely as the NAP on WPS launches. It provides a coordinating tool for action including the COVID-19 pandemic, an emergency situation with an increased burden of care for women.
The launch comes shortly after the commemoration of International Women's Day and also coincides with the 65th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
The priority theme for the CSW65 is “Women’s Full and Effective Participation and Decision-making in Public Life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”.
Ms Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation said “In South Africa, women have long been fighting for Gender Equality. They fought through the anti-pass campaigns of 1913 & 1930. They continued to lead national campaigns against pass laws in 1956. They were part and leaders in the 1976 student protests.”
